Why I’m Returning to Tanzania
Introduction
There are places that stay with you long after you return home. Not because of how they looked, but because of how they changed the way you see the world.
Tanzania is one of those places for me.
Our First Experience in Tanzania
Safari had always been on Russ’s bucket list, and when the opportunity to travel to Tanzania presented itself, we couldn’t say no. I expected beauty. I expected wildlife, vast landscapes, and moments that would feel unforgettable. What I didn’t fully anticipate was how deeply the experience would recalibrate my sense of presence, connection, and responsibility, both as a traveler and as a storyteller.
Time moved differently while exploring all that Tanzania had to offer. Conversations felt more intentional. The reminder that people, not places, are always the heart of any meaningful experience became impossible to ignore. Meeting and connecting with people who did not speak the same language and did not share the same cultural background was remarkable, and it set the tone for everything that followed.
Why This Was Never a One-Time Trip
That first journey left a mark on me. Not in a way that demanded immediate sharing or explanation, but in a way that slowly worked its way into how I approach my work, my relationships, and the way I move through the world.
Over time, it became clear that this wasn’t going to be a one-time experience.
Returning With Intention
This November, I’ll be returning to Tanzania with Russ. Not to recreate what we experienced before, but to engage with it more thoughtfully, more humbly, and with a deeper understanding of what it means to show up well in a place that is not your own.
This return will include a safari experience hosted by Destination Inspiration, alongside a humanitarian component connected to the work of Family Village Foundation. While I am not hosting or organizing the trip, both the experience and the mission behind it are deeply meaningful to me, and I want to share it with you.
What This Journey Represents
For me, this journey is about more than travel. It is about perspective. It is about slowing down enough to listen. It is about remembering that meaningful experiences should give more than they take.
As a photographer and creative, it is easy to focus on what is visually striking. But some of the most impactful moments are the quiet ones. The shared meals. The unspoken understanding. The feeling of being a guest, not the center of the story.
Travel With Responsibility
I believe travel, when done with intention, can expand empathy and deepen gratitude. It can remind us how interconnected we are, even across oceans and cultures. And it can reinforce the responsibility we carry when we choose to tell stories beyond our own communities.
Closing Reflection
In the coming months, I’ll share more reflections as I prepare for this return. An honest look at why this experience matters to me and how it continues to shape the way I see the world.
For those who feel called, I’ll also share an opportunity to support the work of Family Village Foundation. There is absolutely no expectation, simply an open door for those who would like to give alongside this experience.
