Spring Engagement Photos at the Utah State Capitol | Rachel & Lance
Each spring, the Utah State Capitol transforms into one of Salt Lake City’s most iconic locations for engagement photos. The cherry blossoms create a soft, romantic setting while the Capitol’s timeless architecture adds a sense of elegance that feels both classic and refined.
For Rachel and Lance’s engagement session, we were lucky enough to photograph during that brief window when the blossoms were at their peak. Spring in Utah can be unpredictable, but when the timing works, there is something incredibly special about combining fresh blooms, beautiful light, and a couple’s natural connection.
A Romantic Cherry Blossom Engagement Session in Salt Lake City
When Irene of Irene & Co Events introduced me to Rachel and Lance, she knew we would be a wonderful fit. With her offices connecting both Utah and Connecticut, Irene understood my love for photographing couples in both places and knew my true-to-color, timeless photography style aligned with the vision Rachel and Lance had for their portraits.
From the beginning, Rachel brought an effortless editorial confidence to their session. Her white dress with black details and black bow heels felt sophisticated and fashion-forward while still complementing the romantic feeling of the cherry blossoms.
Lance’s classic black slacks and light blue shirt balanced Rachel’s look perfectly. Together, their outfits felt polished without competing with the beauty of the location.
One of the best things couples can do when choosing engagement session outfits is consider the environment. Your clothing does not need to match the location, but it should feel intentional alongside it. The strongest images happen when the styling, setting, and emotion all work together.
Why the Utah State Capitol Is Perfect for Timeless Engagement Photos
The Utah State Capitol is popular for a reason. The grand columns, stone steps, and surrounding landscape create a backdrop that feels elegant without feeling overly formal.
While the cherry blossoms are only here for a short time each spring, the architecture of the Capitol makes it beautiful year-round. It provides clean lines, soft neutral tones, and a sense of place while still allowing the couple to remain the focus.
That balance is something I always look for when choosing engagement locations. A beautiful backdrop should enhance your photos, not overpower them. The setting, light, colors, and overall feeling all work together to create images that will still feel meaningful years from now. I share more about this approach and the details that create lasting imagery in my guide on what makes wedding photos feel timeless.
Creating Engagement Photos That Feel Like You
Rachel and Lance’s session had a dreamy, romantic feeling, but some of my favorite moments came from the movement between poses. The little interactions, natural laughter, and quiet moments together are often the images that couples connect with most.
Even with a more editorial style, engagement photos should still feel personal. The goal is not to create images that look like everyone else’s Pinterest board. The goal is creating photographs that feel elevated while still representing your relationship.
Rachel naturally stepped into the fashion-inspired moments while Lance relaxed more and more as the session continued. That combination created a gallery that felt polished, but still genuine.

Tips for Planning Spring Engagement Photos in Utah
Spring engagement sessions are some of my favorites because everything feels fresh and full of life. If you are hoping for blossoms, keep in mind that timing changes every year depending on weather.
A few things to consider:
• Stay flexible with dates if a specific bloom or season matters to you
• Choose outfits that complement your location instead of competing with it
• Think about movement and comfort, not just how clothing looks standing still
• Trust your photographer to find the best light and locations within a space
The most beautiful engagement photos happen when thoughtful planning meets real moments. If you are preparing for your own session and wondering how to make the most of it, I share more advice in my guide on how to prepare for your engagement photos.
